Those nice flat areas unfortunately tend to be the most dangerous areas in Oakland. Things may have changed since, and there are certainly exceptions, but that's what I remember being a rule of thumb.

Thanks. I actually live in Oakland but I am not familiar with West Oakland. FYI, flat does not mean it is dangerous. Obviously that is true in some areas but certainly not all. I'm riding through there tomorrow. I thought I would change my route but I've reconsidered for now. Cheers.
