I know that it's West Oakland. I know that the fabled "Ghost Town" was/is to the north. However, I was wondering, is this a pretty safe neighborhood to live in? I won't be walking by myself at night (I ride a bike everywhere). A place just opened up in a warehouse, and one of my friends is thinking of moving in.

He doesn't know too much about West Oakland though. Lives in Temescal now.

Thanks

Lots of car breakins and it is very transitional. I wouldn't want to live there, it isn't very pleasant. Freeways, onramps, wide streets, speeding traffic and it is pretty dark. Also too close to the truck routes.

I just rode my bike through there today (well from coming down West Street and then onto 27th - a block away). I felt fine on a bike in the daytime but it did feel rather desolate not "settled." Hard to say. I personally wouldn't live there but I am more cautious. I suggest going there at different times of the day and night and see how you or your friend feel.

Oh boy, I take back what I said now! I didn't realize that area was where the shootings occurred. It is just a nice flat area to ride my bike to/from North Berkeley. Maybe I should stay on the other side of the highway going forward!!! I'll just go down 40th moving forward.

I thought the roughest part of West Oakland was the lower bottoms?

the bottoms is gentrifying and pushing stuff north, longfellow is gentrifying and pushing stuff south--all towards ghosttown and dogtown... but overall crime in oakland is really down--YTD murder down 30%, robbery down 37%, burglary down 15%.. basically crime overall is down 9%... buy yourself an ice cream cone, oakland, you are nicer than you used to be!

Some will call me a racist, others will know I'm just being a realist, but generally-speaking, any roadway, park, etc. named Martin Luther King is going to be a relatively high-crime area.

I'm sure you'll find that any area, as long as it isn't the rough-est part of town, in any town - not just Oakland, will be perfectly safe, unicorns and fairies then.

Are there no gradients where you live?

Sorry, just burned out on these questions. You came here knowing that West Oakland wasn't safe, yet were hoping that the one block with the cheap rental you (or your friend) wants, will be just fine. It's just a miracle sent from God that it is the price that it is.

How can this person live in Oakland and not know what areas are rough?
