My husband and I are looking to move to the bay area sometime next april. I have skills/job experience in the tech industry and he has restaurant experience. My worry is that we won't be able to find both jobs and an apartment within 2-4 weeks, which is our max budget for temporary housing... We don't make a lot of money where we are now but I know from the listings i see online that the same job I have now would pay a lot more in the bay area. So even though it's hard to save up ahead of time I have hopes that it will pay off in the long run...
How long would we need to find jobs and a place to live? I was preapproved for a $1500/mo room in oakland on airbnb.. Is a month long enough? We're not too picky about where we'd end up living, as long as it's the general area. But, we do have 3 cats, which could be an issue.
This is our first major move out of our hometown area (and it'll be cross-country at that) so I just have the jitters I guess.
Sorry if this is a repeat thread. I looked thru the first couple pages and did a search but didn't find many relevant threads.

It's really hard to say if a month is long enough. I was in a somewhat similar situation when moving here except I had a job lined up (my wife did not). We got temp housing for a month and found another place fairly quickly...about 2 weeks. But that was probably quite fast, particularly since we have a dog. I think cats are easier, but 3 might be a bit much.

I think the biggest issue is how geographically-limited you will be in your search. If you are open to lots of areas, then it should be much easier to find something quickly. We were pretty restricted to just a couple neighborhoods in SF, so that made it significantly harder.

Another challenge is timing of move-in. While you might find a place in your time frame, you might not be able to move into it within that time. There's usually some lead time before that, although in some cases it is very short.

To be frank, if I were in your shoes and really wouldn't be able to manage temp housing for longer than a month, I'd be extremely anxious about the situation. Good luck!

I would get a job, then a place lined up first, before moving. The real estate market here is hot and rentals (especially, reasonably priced rentals) go very fast, often with several people/families competing for the rental.

Pets also seem to pose a problem with many (but, not all) landlords. Even such lovely pets, such as cats.
