When I was in Hong Kong a few weeks ago, a SF area gay couple noticed my A's hat and were giddily excited to see me there. It was cool to run into other locals, and I never had anyone else really ask me where I was from.

Not sure I'd care what others would think of where I come from - I try to be as courteous, respectful and humble as possible whenever I am on someone else's soil, and if they don't like me despite that, then it's on them.

When abroad, I usually tell people I live near San Francisco but I grew up near Washington DC. Most people seem to know that those two places are on opposite sides of the country and very different, and most people have nice/positive things to say about both places, so they treat me nicely. Otherwise, whenever I've told people I'm an American, they either don't care/aren't impressed or they'll make snide remarks about the US- Brits in particular.

I'm from LA and I either say LA or California. I've noticed some people get pretty impressed haha..even otherwise standoffish Frenchmen are like "oh, Los Angeles?! Very nice."
