I've been a longtime user of AC transit (bus) for about 9 years, never had a car.
The only thing to watch out for is that the buses dont always come according to schedule. As a rule of thumb, assume that the currently scheduled bus will not come.
Fortunately, there are some major lines, 51 from Alameda to Oakland being one of them, that is supposed to run every 10 minutes.

You can have both, living in Alameda and taking the AC Transit bus. You would probably be taking the 51, but check on AC Transit | Home Page for maps and schedules.

As for safety and reliability, they are safe within Alameda, but in Oakland, it all depends on where you get off like how "Native Alamedan" stated in an earlier post. If you get off of work late in the evening, I would suggest that you drive. It is not that far to drive to and from Alameda and Oakland. As for reliability, it is not on the minute and can sometimes be off schedule, requiring you to get to the bus stop ahead of time and waiting, something that is not suggested in Downtown Oakland, or even Lake Merritt, in the evening.
