Check out craigslist.org for housing. Consider North Oakland and Walnut Creek. Expect to pay $1000+ per month for a 1BR.

I think Bay Area housing is outrageously expensive, more so in some places than others. My wife and I were paying 1800/month for one side of a small duplex in Menlo Park back in 2000. We bought our home in Calaveras County and lay out $1100 for a very nice home on a few acres. A friend of mine bought a home 100 feet from a major intersection in Redwood City for $550K back in 2002, It's a 2 bedroom, 1 bath 1000sf home on a 5000sf lot. I think that's over the top.

The towns of the western central valley have practically doubled in size in the past 10 years as people that work in the bay area have migrated out there to avoid the high prices. They pay a severe price in their commute though.

I can't imagine how much more expensive bay area housing would be if the 50 or 60 thousand folks that commute into the bay area didn't have the valley outlet. Imagine those folks competing for the available supply of homes.
