Hello, I have specific task on myself. Find an affordable place to live between San Francisco downtown and Lake Tahoe. By affordable I mean that I would like to have a nice place under $700 a month, the lower the better. Preferably no roommates.

It would be nice if I had some coffee shops and parks in walkable distance. The area shouldn't not be sketchy. I have car but it'd be plus if there is some public transportation.

Something you can recommend?

Auburn?

Not much you're going to find other than tiny towns in between the two areas for that price.

Are you willing to live in a small place like a studio? You might be able to find something in a decent part of Sacramento or a surrounding suburb.

Yep, east Sacramento. Placerville maybe?

Define, "Nice place". A studio? 1-br. apt.? 2-br. house?

Try Grass Valley, west of Lake Tahoe.

I don't think you'd find that price anywhere, that's in a decent neighborhood. But, just start looking on Craigslist.

Woodland used to be affordable, until Cache Creek Casino became so huge. Now it's full of casino workers, which drove rents up.

OP, are you low income? If you are, you might qualify for subsidized housing you could afford. There is actually a lot of subsidized housing all over the state. They're usually kept in good condition, from my experience so far. I retired last year and am in subsidized senor housing now. I looked at a number of them around the SF Bay Area, Fresno and Redding, and the ones I looked at were all nice.

EDIT: What about Reno? Or Carson City? I think you could find affordable housing around Reno and Carson City if you were willing to go there. Check out the Reno Craigslist.

That's easy. There are no shortage of those at Sacramento's surrounding area. Plenty of one bedrooms or studios under $700 at Carmichael, Rancho Cordova, even Roseville.

Now, if you want a two-bedroom, that's a lot harder to find.
