And it's been waiting to happen for 60 years or more.

Still waiting.

Two things. First, OP's article is from Al Jazeera America, which is HQ'ed in NYC and has regional offices all within the US, so yeah, the journalists probably are American. I don't actually know if AJA sucks at reporting or not, I just know they're more likely than their friends at Qatar HQ to be more progressive on social issues.

And two...have you been to Point Richmond? It's the cutest place I've ever been to. Mill Valley-level cute. Like, you cross 580 and feel like you jumped back into the 1950's, only without the racism and constant threat of nuclear holocaust. The last time I've ever been to a town that adorable, it was some small town in Minnesota where everyone spoke Norwegian, was over the age of 65, and offered you rhubarb pies until you keeled over. It's the town equivalent of your grandmother's house. Berkeley Hills is Compton compared to Point Richmond. In fact, probably the only reason the rent is so (relatively) low there is because everyone is scared that the Chevron refinery bursts into flame every few years.

...Point Richmond doesn't suck, is what I'm saying.

This is the most amusing and interesting post I've ever read on C-D! Are there really towns in MN where everyone speaks Norwegian and is over 60? I need to visit MN. Loved this post! And you've almost talked me into buying in Pt. Richmond. The advantage of Mill Valley is that it has Marin surrounding it: beaches, mountain, beautiful nature. The disadvantage is, it's unaffordable to most.

Beverly Hills = Compton next to Pt. Richmond. That's funny! I'll have to go check it out next time I'm in the East Bay. Happy New Year! Best post of the year!

By all means check out Point Richmond. I suggest going to lunch at the Hotel Mac. The town has a great amateur theatrical association, the Masquers (Masquers Playhouse, Point Richmond, CA | Over half a century of first-rate community theater!). If the Masquers are playing, cross the street from the Hotel Mac and catch a play or musical.

I stand by my original idea: Point Richmond has much in common with Mill Valley, your flippant comment notwithstanding.

Whose flippant comment? Mine, or Depsey's? I wasn't aware I was being flippant. I was being enthusiastic. I'm very intrigued by Pt. Richmond. Calling Beverly Hills "Compton" was hilarious, though.

It'll be interesting to see what happens to Richmond 15-20 years from now when all the artists and musicians get priced out of Oakland.

There's always Hayward.

Maybe I'm a cynic, but I give Hayward 10-15 years...if the economy continues positively for the most part.

Chevron *has* moved all the jobs they can move out of Richmond; their accounting and other desk work is already in the Walnut Creek / Concord / San Ramon area.
Those administrative jobs have been in other areas for decades...

Point Richmond is very nice, I'm not sure if you have been there, but maybe you should visit some day. I would have moved there in a heartbeat if housing prices weren't so high but condos are going for over 400k and single family homes from around 700k to over a million for one near the water. It's always been immune from the problems that plague Richmond.
