This is a non binding resolution so what exactly are they upset about? How is Google hampering Europeans' ability to use other search engines? Im more inclined to think this is bitterness about being outdone by a US company.

Follow the money.

98% of French online users use Google. 98%. That's a ridiculous market share. The rest of Europe are almost as addicted to Google as France. That means Google basically control Europe's online content. It also means Google is in essence taking a lot of money from Europe that normally would go to a European company, like ad revenue, etc.

It also makes it nearly impossible for any European hi tech company to succeed without also feeding money to Google. Google has basically muscled in and become Europe's biggest middle-man. And naturally European leaders dislike that.

What Europe is doing is probably not fair and against the principle of a free market. But when it's this much money, fairness goes out the window.

This is also one of the reasons why China is banning Google and promoting their own country's search engine - Baidu.

They also seem to be upset that their Euro currency scheme to unseat the US Dollar seems to have sputtered.

Europe is freaking the fuque out because of the NSA. Some American internet search engines and hosts like Facebook are known to turn over data to the NSA, so the anti-Americanism is running high because of that. But at the same time as they're complaining, they're too hooked on their social media to do anything about it, though every once in a while someone tries to set up alternatives.

'Twould be nice if the almighty GOOG and fb would graciously tell NSA to FO. But there is great money to be made in collecting and clandestinely sharing private info of users, so this game will continue. Whatever alternative pops up against the present kings will only repeat more of the same.

Well, no. More likely, the competition would do everything possible to crush any upstarts, or else buy them out. Like what happened to alternative energy companies in the 80's. I agree, though, that Europe isn't jealous of Google, so much as it's becoming allergic to American social media companies and search engines. It's very obnoxious and insidious, when you think about it. You can't blame them.

Which American company refused to turn anything over to the NSA? I forget, but one of them did.
