Welcome to the forum, nulife.
The main issue with Richmond and much of Western CC County, even more than crime, has been the oil refineries. Cancer rates are falling, but traditionally they've been some of the highest in the US.
I used to live in the SE corner of Richmond, off Carlson & San Joaquin, and there were some ruffnecks in the neighborhood but overall the houses and neighbors were nice.

Default Thanks from a future bay area resident . . .

I just want to thank everyone for their honest input on this forum, particularly those who have lived and the area and give their opinions based on experience.

My family is moving to the bay area from the Midwest because I am returning to grad school in Berkeley while my wife is relocating to within her company to San Rafael (without a cost of living differential) and I am struggling to determine the best place for us to live on limited funds. Of course, Richmond housing is cheap, and supposedly crime rates are improving, but for the most part we are avoiding it in favor of more family friendly areas.

If anyone else has any more areas to recommend, they would also be appreciated.

I am not sure what part of Richmond veganwriter lived in 30 yrs ago, I grew up there too. I left almost 30 years ago. It was not better then. I went to RHS and I remember riots starting there and continuing to Helms Jr. High. That happened on average of 3-4 times a school year. There was a lot of violence and crime. I was in the middle of it because of my choices. It doesn't matter what income bracket you or your family were in, the violence and crime still existed, and was published in the Richmond Independent every day. I took a criminal justice class at CCCC in 1976-77. At that time San Pablo had the highest murder rate per capita in the United States. I think the Bay Area is very beautiful. I still call the East Bay home. I did the love the cultural diversity. I think since I did grow up there and saw every spectrum of life, I am more open minded, and accepting of people.
