How did you do on your drive to Reno? If you did ok, then you have nothing to worry about. Given the nature of your worry, I think you did the smart thing to check out the road to Reno in advance.

For the most part I was ok. The emigrant pass got me real bad because it was unexpected. Now I know what to look forward to. That's why I posted here to see if I could get ideas or work around those really high peaks.

There's a route that goes past south Lake Tahoe to Carson City. I don't know if the pass is any lower there, but maybe someone else here will know. Maybe you could check elevations online.
