I am moving to the Bay Area to be near my son who is in Davis. Want to drive to see him, not fly. Love the Bay Area.

I own my own online business and work from home so can live anywhere. Am single, empty nester.

Safety is important. I love to walk my dogs and go for long walks or hikes. Love farmers markets, coffee shops, community events. Hope to be near Bart to visit SF easily. But a ferry can work too.

Would like to find bungalow or any SFH under 400k. Have looked at Benicia, sw Martinez, a alameda, Berkeley, el cerrito, pleasant hill. Can be flexible. Also see Brentwood is nice and will have EBart but while I love the country it feels off the grid for a single empty nester.

Please give me ideas of good places for me.

Thank you. Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Fairfield would be only a 30 min drive to your son, and you could drive to next door Vallejo for the ferry, take an express bus to BART, or take casual carpool M-F. On weekends it's easy to drive into SF or to a BART station. The Green Valley area is beautiful and should be within your price range.

Finding a place in your price range will be a challenge. Benicia's nice. Try Concord, which is on the BART line. Surprisingly, it's possible to find a place for your price in El Cerrito, but I imagine the competition might be stiff. Winter's actually a good time to house hunt, because there's NO competition for the few properties that are up for sale. El Cerrito is close enough to Berkeley that you can enjoy all the amenities you're interested in, next door in Berkeley. The weather in El Cerrito will be cooler than in the other places recommended, that are farther from the Bay, just FYI. No air conditioning needed in El Cerrito.
