Keep in mind anything reasonable you see in SF on craigslist will lead to a giant line of applicants who probably make 10 times what you make and willing to put down 6 times the rent up front. I went with a friend of mine to a showing near USF and there were literally 30 people waiting to get in. It was a 1 bedroom unit priced at $2150. I'd look in the east bay i.e. Oakland.

That may be seasonal, somewhat. The market usually slows down in winter. Still, the OP may end up opting for more square footage for his money, and some yard space, in the E Bay.

Dammit man! I am not looking forward to a "bidding war" style of apartment hunting. I guess this really is a hunt huh?

I'll be spending the next few days in to the weekend scoping out various areas of the city. Walking around at night and all.

If I get no luck, then off to Oakland/Emeryville.

The trick, OP, is to watch Craigslist closely (a few times/day) and to be the first person to call. Unless the ad says "Open House". If you're the first to call, you get first dibs.

Good advice, I was actually able to rent a 4 bedroom 2 bath remodeled house this way. I was the first person to email and call along with showing pay stubbs etc. It's basically a luck of the draw, you have to not only be first but the owner/broker have to like you as well.
