The problem in SF is different. In most metro areas, 80k as a single is enough money to afford a nice apartment in a nice neighborhood. In SF, that is not thr case.

80k is just above the median salary for San Francisco residents. As a single person you can certainly afford to live reasonably in a studio (assuming no huge debts), however you will not be able to live luxuriously like on that salary in other metro areas.

Once upon a time, SF was more about ideas and creativity than luxury.

Budget $2,500 for a studio unless you're comfortable living in a very rough area, then you should budget about $1,700 a month for a studio.

$80,000 is a pretty dismal salary to be living in the bay area on. Regardless of age, if I had that salary I'd be looking in Seattle, WA or Portland, OR.

It's unnecessary to pay $2500 for a studio. The Richmond and Sunset have plenty of good places for less than that, as well as other perfectly fine areas.

I agree, make the 30-60 min commute if you can afford to. A lot of people who work in SF do. You can definitely get by with $80k in SF relatively comfortably though.

You can get by on that salary fine. But, as others noted, keep track of your monthly expenses and choose the right neighborhoods to look for an apartment.

We did a fantasy football draft with 12 people this year in our friend's Tendernob studio and had plenty of room. $650/mo

Well, I can see why it would be worthwhile to spring for $2500. That Richmond/GG Park 1 br. looks fabulous, and what a great location! You came up with some great finds. And it's a very good point that the OP should be careful about neighborhoods. When I looked on Craigslist just a few minutes ago, most of the listings were around the Tenderloin, and most of the rest were in the Richmond, a few in Ingleside. The Richmond is full of really nice apartments, and its a great neighborhood. The only drawback is the commute downtown. On the Geary Limited stop bus, it can be manageable, though.

He said he works in SF, so he must have some idea about what neighborhoods to avoid.

Besides the slow commute to dwwntown, the lack of sunny days can be a problem for some people. Other that, i feel the Richmond Dist has a lot to offer
