Hi All

Another usual Indian with a Wife and 3Yrs old girl planning to move to SFO.

Any suggestion for a good Indian community and good school district.Office is in Financial Dt, so BART is what I am planning to take. But would be nice to have the family in an Indian community, since wife might not be working for sometime.

Also, what would be a package I should be enquiring. Would 100K be enough?

Please do share your feedback and if anyone has any Indian community in mind, please please let me know

thanks
Vijay

Easy. Fremont, in the east Bay Area, is an Indian community. South Asian, and some East Asian. My brother is one of the few non-Asians left. You might actually run into me at the grocery store, during one of my visits. There's a BART station. It's kind of a boring suburban community, compared to Berkeley or Oakland, but that's a good thing, for raising kids, in a way. It's safe. There are good parks. Decent schools. There's a bike trail that goes to a regional park on the Bay.

It's hard to say what you should be negotiating for, because it depends on the position and your skills and experience. Offhand, I'd say you should ask for at least 100K. There was a guy from Pakistan who posed similar questions here last year, but he was only being given 90K. He was asking if that was enough for a family of 4. For 4 people, it would be a tight budget, but do-able, barely. 100K for 3 would be a better fit. Is there a listed salary range for your position? In any case, they should give you a raise after 6 months if you do well, or after the first year, certainly. You may get both, if you do well. So the 100K, or whatever you get, will go up soon enough.

And by the way, don't expect too much in terms of standard of living, in the beginning. You're looking at: apartment living, and a used car (if any). Over time, as your pay improves, your options will open up. But it's a nice community, and a nice region. Welcome!

I don't know of any areas that have an indian community where almost everyone is Indian. But lots of areas where the Indian population is high. Fremont is definitely in the running. But I have noticed a pretty large influx of Indians in the tri valley area in the last few years. I think it's because of the schools and low crime rates. However 100K will be a bit tight unless you are pretty thrifty and your job has benefits.

We noticed a lot of Indian families when we visited in Santa Clara, near the University. Good luck!

Maybe you've already done this, OP, but you could contact people at the Indian community center I linked earlier, to get their advice.
