San Diego, for sure. I lived there for a few years and really enjoyed it. It's pretty slow and laid back compared to the Bay Area, and it's nowhere near as diverse, but it might make more sense given your preferences. Personally, I think Hillcrest is a million times nicer than the Castro.

I moved to SF almost 6 years ago from the Mountain West and have loved it. I met my husband my first weekend out at Badlands (true story). While I know that I am obviously the exception, and this was all pre Grindr days, there are plenty of eligible 30 something professional guys out there. Just when I find myself saying that SF is a small town and I know everybody, I meet a whole group of guys that don't even overlap my social network. Maybe its because I moved from a very white area, but I think SF is definitely diverse. LA and NYC probably have more diversity but there are plenty of Asian and Latino guys in SF. If I were to stereotype the main types of gay men in SF, I would say there is a large group of older gay men, asians, techies, and bear/fetish kind of guys. Of course there are men that fall in between but in general SF is not "pretty" like WeHo.

If you are considering moving, I would first make sure you have a good gig, thats important. And then also make sure you like SF. Sure it is expensive and finding a place to live is a challenge but the area has so much to offer. Great food, weather, outdoor stuff, etc. I would certainly recommend living in SF proper. I don't think its necessary to live in the Castro; basically every neighborhood has a critical mass of gays, but I think Mission/Dolores/Hayes Valley/Haight/Castro neighborhoods are all great.

I also have a good number of friends in San Diego and thats also a great place too. I'd choose SD over LA, but SF is by far my favorite!
