What's your best estimate for driving from Santa Clara (near university) to SFO, leaving around 5:30pm? Please don't tell me to take Caltrain - I'm well aware of the option but I'm picking up my mom with suitcases and I'm not going to make her take Caltrain. Unfortunately her flight lands at 7:00 pm so I don't have much choice. Do you think an hour and a half is enough time to allow?

1.5 hours is more than enough time. You can leave 1.5 hours early and not worry about being late. You will get there early, so you can just walk around Tanforan Mall in San Bruno. You're just a couple minutes from the airport.

Today? Fridays seem worse, I think because more people are heading into the city.

Average days at that time it takes between :50-1:10 from Great America Pkwy to Hillsdale, so I think you'll be close to ok. If she checked luggage, it often takes another 45 minutes to get off the plane and get luggage at SFO anyway, so you should be absolutely fine. Sometimes Waze tells us to get over to 280, but that never seems to pan out very well!

Great, thanks. If that's the case I'll leave a bit later to try and time it for 7:00pm. Would you recommend 280 or 101 for this drive?

you can't go wrong with 280. even if it takes the same amount of time it is less frustrating.

Generally, 280 has less traffic, but it varies at times. If you have a smart phone, just check out the Google Maps APP with traffic turned on. It streams in real-time, you can make your decision when you leave the house. There might be an accident on 280, who knows, so it's better to check with the APP first.

Thanks everyone. After checking Google traffic I left at 6:00pm, took 280 and found myself waiting in the parking lot of Peter's Cafe in Millbrae by 6:55. The only traffic backups were on the surface streets in Santa Clara heading towards 280, and then for a few miles between Palo Alto and Woodside. This thread saved me from an extra half hour of waiting!
