Regarding Sonoma:
Sleepy? Very. No nightlife to speak of at all, but during the day it's amazing. Excellent, world class food. Super nice people. Weather is unbeatable. Yeah, it's pretty expensive, but that's the price you pay for living in a place where you can sit outside and enjoy outstanding local food year round basically. It's cool and rainy for a few months in the winter, but from April to October, there is no nicer place on Earth.

If you need lots of bars and nightlife, you definitely want Petaluma instead (I have never been to San Rafael at night, so I have no idea about that). If you're driving from San Rafael to Sonoma in rush hour, you're probably looking at 40-60 minutes I would assume and the traffic on the 101 sucks during rush.

We're in our 30s/40s with a 12 year old daughter and we wouldn't rather live anywhere else; but we're intentionally boring and prefer sitting on our deck listening to music and enjoying the markets and events on weekend days than going out at night so take that for what it's worth.
We're pretty boring too and I like a lot of the things you mentioned guys, but like to get out every once in a while.

What would you say life and the vibe is in Petaluma? I actually just saw a job listing out there and might need to take a trip up to see it.

Well I definitely need some of those! And thanks, it certainly has turned into an odyssey finding a good job that won't steal my soul quite as much as my last one did.

It's quite a bit hipper with an actual bar scene for doing things at night. It can also be a wee bit sketchier, but nothing truly dangerous. Let me put it this way, if I were just getting out of college and HAD to move to a town in Sonoma County, it would be Petaluma in a heartbeat. Since we don't care about that anymore, we didn't even consider Petaluma when we moved out here 3 years ago and love the central convenience and slightly larger town amenities of Santa Rosa.

First thing that comes to mind when referencing Napa/Sonoma:
