Yes, I have considered the areas east of Stockton.

But I am far from retirement age, so I need to live within a reasonable commute of larger cities with solid job opportunities. If I lived out there I would probably need to commute into Sac.

To be honest I really like Yosemite more than Tahoe. So closer proximity to the YNP would be better. That is why I am thinking of Livermore/Brentwood which is about 2.5 hours to the Park and 1 hour to the coast. I think areas east of Modesto could work if they are nicer climates than the Modesto, maybe higher altitiude. I don't like the smog, heat, crime and other not so appealing aspects of Modesto, Stockton, Fresno, etc...

My wife grew up in Yosemite, we have considered moving back.
The best we found was Grass Valley as it is 45 minutes from Sacramento.

I have a friend in Brentwood and she tells me there is a building noticable gang presence there and then there was the racial thing that happened a while ago.... when she moved there 10 years ago she loved it... and now they can't move because nothing's selling and she's not very happy at all...

I haven't tried to verifiy any of this... but I tend to believe what she tells me. It's not a place I would want to move to.

Hmmm... That doesn't sound very good for Brentwood. Obviously crime happens everywhere to some degree. But I don't like the notion of a building gang presence. I wonder if that that is isolated to certain parts or representative of the whole area?

She lives in a nice (expensive) gated community area and if I understood her correctly is she is seeing gang graffitti now, where as she wasn't a few years ago.

Of course, I'm seeing it in San Leandro now, and I wasn't a few years ago.... it could just mean we are now more aware of it, and know what we are seeing...

I was checking out the city idata info on Grass Valley and the climate looks good. At 2400' it is cooler than Sac., it even gets a little snow in the winter. Overall it looks like a great place. And the housing costs are suprisingly affordable.

Well, I think Livermore would probably be better for proximity to more companies and the daily commute. I also like that Livermore has open spaces with the wineries there.

I guess I 'll have to look at what companies are on the East Side and within reasonable commutes from Livermore. I think daily driving to the Silicon Valley would be too much of a grind.
