Is it not filled with non-whites/foreigners?

I am not saying this is a good or bad thing. I am simply asking you a question.

Why is this so difficult for you to understand? He called the Bay Area an overcrowded scum pit and said that outside of it, people actually speak English...

I'm sure he didn't mean it literally... Relax. It's a nice day - care to meet me in JLS for a beer?

Yes. Born and raised in the Bay, am making good money here, but whenever this tech bubble pops, I'm on the next plane to NYC or LA. Or maybe somewhere in Europe, since I have dual-citizenship. Those three are better and more interesting places to be, imo.

I don't love it here, but the opportunities here are currently great.

Yep -- when we retire, we're outta here.

Not that here is bad, I just want to be close to my family.

Thank you.

My parents have accents. I have no problem with purple people with accents or green people with no accents. I find it somewhat disrespectful for people to come here and not speak the language. Hell, i see billboards now in spanish up and down the peninsula...Wtf is that?

Its nice to order a burger from micky d's from an english speaking teenager, not a broken english speaking 40 something.

And before anyone else wants to paint me to be some sort of racist, my wife is of portugese descent and my father in law is a black man from detroit

"Broken English" is an offensive term to a lot of people. And what do you mean by "it's offensive that people come here and don't speak the language" ? They do speak English! Some just don't speak it very well yet. Not everyone is good at learning a language, especially those who grew up in another country and have been speaking a different language their whole lives.

Yeah, everything is offensive these days...i sure wouldnt want to hurt the feelings of the non english speaking people that have taken up residence in the scum pit bay area. Maybe i should find a new term for " doesnt really speak english"...

No, not everything is offensive. But it's pretty clear you're not a very cultured or tolerant person, so it's probably best for everyone that you left the Bay Area anyway.

What does "if you could" mean? Of course you can - just go if you want.

Do you mean that you feel trapped here by the high wages that can't be matched in your field anywhere else? Again, it's still a choice to stay, but it invalidates the argument that "it's too expensive."

I've been grappling with this question for many years (the main reason I found and started reading/posting to this forum). It seems, intuitively, that I'm paying too much for the COL here. But, after scanning available jobs in my field all over the country for YEARS, I have almost never seen a viable move I could make that meets the basic qualification of providing a lower ratio of monthly expenses to income. Despite the radically lower cost of living in the midwest, northwest, mountain west, and other parts of the country I've looked into, the pay is also so much lower in those areas that the math never works out. And I work in the public sector - not the tech industry.

In all that time I've seen jobs that could have improved that basic equation two times - in Fresno and Modesto. After looking into the quality of life in those areas I declined to apply.

Eventually you just have to take ownership of your life and learn to be happy where you are, or else go somewhere else.
