Hello All,
Looking for some advise about our proposed trip to California at the end of August beginning of September 2008.We are a couple with a 16 year old daughter.
We intent to fly in to LA and spend 7 nights in Santa Monica getting some beach time and exploring the delights of Los Angeles.
We intend to fly out of San Francisco and will spend 5 nights there.
I am particularly looking for advise of what to do in between those two stops.
Either
1) drive up the coast road from Santa Monica to San Francisco and stop a couple of nights but where.
or
2) Drive from Santa Monica to Oakland and stay a couple of nights so to see Yosemite and then on to San Francisco.
I know by cutting down on the time in Santa Monica and San Francisco we could do both but we do not want to do that so what is the best, the Coast or Yosemite

If it were me, I would drive up the coast on highway 101. You could spend a night in Big Sur. It's only 460 miles between Los Angeles and San Francisco......so you wouldn't have to really schedule two overnighters.

Personally, I think you're spending too much time in Santa Monica and SF. I'd pinch a day or two from both of those cities. That'll allow you time to drive up the coast. You could take in the Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Big Sur is a good suggestion. Carmel and Monterey are not to be missed. Maybe spend a night in either of those cities. Carmel has great shopping and restaurants. Monterey has a great aquarium. Take in the 17 miles Drive from Carmel to Monterey while you're in the area, to see how the "other half" lives. That's where the Pebble Beach Golf Course is. Next stop is Santa Cruz, where you can hit the beaches and the Board Walk. From there I would head east to Yosemite and spend a two or three days. It's spectacular. Maybe you can treat yourself and spend a night or two at the Ahwahnee hotel. Then head to SF for a day or two. Well, that's what I'd do. Oh, and if you're wine lovers, you might consider driving up to Napa for a day and do some wine tasting.

I'm with Kdog. Take the time to get a taste of california by spreading it out. Sure there is lots to see in San Francisco, but cali is one of the most beautiful states and I think you would do yourself a favor to see as much diversity as possible.

If you stay on the coast you'll be missing the "other" CA. Head for Yosemite, if you're there after Labor Day you'll miss the crowds.

Seven nights in Santa Monica? WHY? If you want a beach vacation, go to Santa Barbara on the way up to SF, then Big Sur, then Carmel, then Santa Cruz. With all the time you have listed, you might also consider going to Yosemite and then cutting back to the central coast. You can probably do LA in 3 days. San Fran in 3-4. Where are you coming from? Why so much time in LA?
