The BART station at Colma is usually "dead quiet" (pun intended).

The reality is that the transbay tube is at capacity, we couldn't run more trains through it even if we wanted to. During commute hours, there is a train running through the tube about every 2 minutes 12 seconds. This is why we've suddenly started to plan for a 2nd tube...

I have never felt unsafe on BART, and I have gone from the sketchy 16th and Mission stop (visiting friends in the city, or going to bars) to the east bay right before the trains stop running shortly before midnight. During commuting hours, it's fine. It's a little grungy and it's crowded, but it's fine

It's not about running more trains. It's about putting more cars on each train. Jade said too many cars are in disrepair...? I've seen them run 6 car trains during commute hours. That's not going to work.

On the other hand, the Caltrain is really pleasant.
You could probably relieve the stress of commuting on BART and at the same time get a lot of elbow room if you do what the commuter did in this video:

This. It is underfunded, but the gap is tens of millions to build the needed infrastructure. The plan for the second tube isn't new, though--it's been in the 50-year plan for decades. It's just new that they're studying in depth to figure out how to actually build it now that the system is maxing out. Wish I could say this problem is unique to the Bay Area, but it's a chronic issue with infrastructure (transit and otherwise) throughout the country.

(There will be new train cars next year and that will help by allowing for longer trains whenever possible, but there's a limit to what they can add on there, too. It's a Band-Aid, not a true fix.)

Many people who manage to find a seat now won't be able to once the new cars arrive. They're designed to have even more room for bicycles and ADA motorized devices at the cost of several less seats per car.
