Someone recently mentioned in a thread that there are maps which show the safest areas in San Francisco in which to live for surviving an earthquake.

Can anyone provide a link to any of these maps?

If you're only talking about San Francisco itself, a big quake will get you no matter what. But the least safe place to be is on landfill, so you'd want to avoid the Marina district - which got hit the hardest in 1989. A few other neighborhoods are built on landfill, but I'm blanking right now... I think Marina Bay and SoMa are among them.

Here's another SF map:

Seismic Hazard Zones (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/sfgate/object.cgi?object=/chronicle/pictures/2000/11/30/mn_seismicmap.jpg&paper=chronicle&file=MNW81681.DT L&directory=/chronicle/archive/2000/11/30 - broken link)

I had never thought of Treasure Island as a liquefaction zone, but I guess it makes sense, given that it is "artificial."

Well, the Hayward Fault's maximum capability is about 7.5 - which would still be horrific, but not like an 8.4. It's most likely to be between 6.5 and 7.0. That could still kill as many as 10,000 people in the East Bay if it hits at a bad time.
