i'm surprised nobody has mentioned walking around the mission. walk one direction up mission and come back via valencia. the two streets are very different and vibrant. grab a super taco at one of the taquerias. best $3.50 you'll spend. lots of bars and little stores to investigate.

plus, most of your touring is centered around the northern part of the city. there is so much more to see.

Thanks guys! I also see the Haight-Ashbury area is popular too. And I see BEST pizza in SF is Tony's Pizza Napoletana at Stockton & Union, so I'll probably try that since it's much closer to my hotel than the Paxti's Pizza that I wanted to try. Tony's probably tastes better anyway.

Anything else please?

Ha! I just LOVE pizza (& Chinese food), but there are just chain pizza places in my area...nothing different, so I want to see how other places' pizza taste. I consider myself a bit of a foodie. To me, like I'm sure many others, finding & exploring the good food places is 1/2 the fun of a vacation to a different place. (By the way, the best pizza in my area I think is Round Table, which of course is all over...it's hard to beat that gourmet chicken & garlic!)

Good job making the switch to Tony's pizza. It's much better than Paxti's (which is quite good, though) by most people's measure. Prepare to amazed and schooled in the art of pizza. Tony's has multiple oven types (wood, gas, coal) and multiple temperature settings to make various styles to perfection.

Incidentally, since you seemed so interested in Paxti's I'm guessing you are craving Chicago-style pizza, which is Paxti's real specialty. Not to fear--Tony has an entire restaurant just down the street from his Pizza Napoletana joint called Capo's that specializes in deep dish pizza and is better than Paxti's too.

Tomasso's is also excellent and in the same general area. The tip for Golden Boy is a good one, too, for a late-night Sicilian-style slice after the bar.

I would recommend a Sunday night dinner at Trestle:
Trestle | We serve a delicious prix fixe meal, with the comfort & whimsy found at a family gathering.

It's a prix fixe place in the lower North Beach area that's reasonably priced and a very San Francisco experience, using only locally sourced ingredients. Each course offers a fairly safe choice and a more adventurous one and the menu rotates regularly.

The reason I suggest Sunday dinner there is that, right across the street is Doc's Lab, a basement jazz club with a free show on Sundays. It's nice and reminds me a lot of the Village Vanguard in NYC, only cleaner and with a nicer cocktail bar. They have a 17-piece jazz band for the Sunday show. It's a lot of fun.
