SF has a law that regulate the maximum a bedroom can be charged for a rent controlled unit. That means if a tenant is paying below market for a 2-bedroom apt with rent control, say $1,500/mo; the tenant cannot charge more than $750 for that bedroom if he/she are to take on a roommate. So your best bet is to find one of these (and it looks like you're already doing that on craigslist) and see if you can pass the "roommate test".

Rent a room. I moved from Oregon to Marin County, didn't even have a job lined up. Anyone can do it if you're willing to have roommates. I had them up to the day I moved in with my husband. Have never lived alone. By that token, I can tell stories of some fruitcakes I roomed with. But I also made lifelong friends too. It's a great way to meet people if you're new to the area.

Also: Happy hour for dinner. Got me through most of my 20's, LOL

Rent a room in a shared house in the East Bay, and take BART to work in SF. If you have work in SF. But the rents even for a room are going up, and even in the E Bay will soon surpass your budget. A year and a half ago, people were coming here, and being advised to get a room in Berkeley for $500. Now, the rents are pushing your limits, OP. But you could find something in El Cerrito or Albany, possibly. Just be aware that there will be competition for that semi-affordable space.

i'd also suggest living in a van down by the river, but alas, no rivers nearby really. you could try Sacramento.

You could probably even find a modest apartment in Sacramento for $1k/month. But you probably don't have to go that far. Try Vallejo, Richmond, Pittsburg, and other unpopular East Bay locales.

I could easily find a modest apartment in Sacramento for under 1k a month.

Is there any public transportation that goes from Richmond (or any other East Bay city) to San Francisco?

...and was that recently or back in the 80's? Things have changed dramatically since even I lived in the City.

It would be terribly unwise to move to San Francisco w/o a salaried job/career nowadays. OP clearly doesn't have a job lined up...at least not one that's paying more than minimum wage.

Also, OP seems to be asking the exact same questions regarding NYC (which is probably less expensive than San Francisco). Hard to take these kinds of posts very seriously.

I think it's time I made a song for people who don't know me.

I don't need to know you personally to know that you're not seriously moving here. Where in San Francisco is your job located again? Seems like you're getting the same responses over on the NYC board too. They're calling you out as a troll over there. Seems like you're doing the same here now. But please...educate us on your plans. You might be taken more seriously.
