It would be best to a move to a cheaper part of the state. Like Sacramento.
That's about twice as much as what they really make. They average around 90k. Assistant managers make about 45-50k . All of Which is middle class here in the Bay Area.

I guess the stores you are thinking of paid less than the ones I had first hand experience with. I definitely haven't researched all of the stores.

Costco and Trader Joes pay regular full time employees about $50k. There is really wide variance in retail.

Your definition of Bay Area middle class is pretty out of date.

Big Box stores are a completely different retail beast.
I imagine Dicks pays fairly well. Foot Locker, probably not. REI? They have good benefits but lower pay.

It really depends on the annual revenues of the store! OP didn't give us much insight, but there is a very wide range in retail pay grades. Many of our indie grocery chains pay 2x more than the Safeways / Lucky's of the world, post union.

My son worked at Costco while he was going to college and top pay for a full time employee was around $40,000 - $42,000 a year. I just checked glassdoor and they list the salary for home depot & best buy asst manager jobs and it shows both with an average annual pay of around $59,000.

glassdoor shows the average asst. manager salary for a Sports Authority store at $1262 a month Sports Authority Assistant Manager Salary | Glassdoor

Salary I suppose depends on the "store level" (e.g is it a Flagship store?) you're assigned too.

Old navy pays ASM's about 35-45ish (I think) and Store Manager about 80K above.

Please let me know which retail stores pay a manager $180k per year.

There are different levels of middle class. There's lower middle class and upper middle class. 50K is lower/middle class here. 90K on the higher end of middle class.

This. Upper management at Wal Mart pays quite well. "Manager" at a place like Hobby Lobby is meaningless. And to get those upper management jobs, you don't apply at the store, but at the national office, usually.
