I'm currently living in SF and am seriously considering moving to Santa Rosa in a few months for a job. The job would actually be a little further north (in Cloverdale), but it seems like SR would be a decently sized city from which to commute. Can anyone give any advice on nice neighborhoods to look for house/condo/townhouse/apartment rentals that are within walking distance to shops, coffee, restaurants, and maybe even a bar? My partner and I are in our early 30s and we'd love a friendly neighborhood that is walkable. I'm also concerned about meeting other youngish people. Any advice on how to go about making friends in the area? Thanks for your help!!

commuting from santa rosa to cloverdale may not be ideal - from the south side of santa rosa to central cloverdale is 30-45 mins. have you thought about living in healdsburg instead? it's a 15-20 min commute. they have more of the walk to shops/coffee/restaurants/bars type scene than santa rosa does.

Thanks for the suggestion! I always thought that Healdsburg was skewed toward an older/richer population that wouldn't necessarily be ideal for younger people looking to make friends. Not so?

i never lived there, only stopped by on my way from sr to cloverdale - i found that it's actually your demographic. 30s & up. those people that are tired of the party lifestyle & are looking to settle down, but also want to enjoy the surrounding businesses. they've got some really good pubs there

Default Junior College

I think the neighborhood you are looking for is the "JC" or Junior College neighborhood of NE Santa Rosa. Very walkable, and with good walking access to trendy shops, restaurants & bars where college students & young professionals congregate. If you're house hunting on a map, look in the area bounded by 4th Street to the south, Mendocino to the west (i.e. just east of 101), Lewis to the north, and Franklin/Bryden to the east. You might also try the streets around Talbot, between Sonoma and 4th. Happy hunting -- while Santa Rosa does not "show" well from the freeway(!), my husband and I discovered to our surprise that NE Santa Rosa is actually pleasant, and sometimes even lovely, once you are inside it...

I saw an article recently—maybe in Sunset Mag—that had Healdsburg rated as the 7th (I think it was 7th... in the top 10, definitely) in the best USA cities/towns to live in... quality of life-wise.

healdsburg is warmer than santa rosa, but i think they are having a heat wave right now. they might hit that temp a few times during the summer (july-ish), but usually not during may.
