I love Marin. Lived in San Rafael for 23 years, then moved to Austin, Texas. If was fine, but I'm on my way home now - in the process of buying a town home in the place I belong.

What did you not like about Austin? I have friends moving to Austin and visit frequently.

My experience with Austin was.probably not typical, so I'm not going to bad mouth it. But in general, I would say that the hardest thing about Austin to me was that it is in Texas. People like to says that it really isn't like the rest of Texas, but that is a myth. Sure, every city has its own culture, and Austin is no exception. But if the idea of living in Texas does not appeal to you, don't think you are avoiding that by moving to Austin.

Mid Peninsula (San Mateo area), Berkeley, mid-Marin (Larkspur to Fairfax). Also Santa Cruz if that counts as Bay Area. Historical neighborhoods in SF like Russian Hill, North Beach...
