So thinking of buying, affordability issues have us looking at Morgan Hill or the Livermore/Dublin area. I like the suburban feel of either of these places.

I telecommute, my wife works in Palo Alto, so either way it's quite the commute. I'm thinking Morgan Hill might be easier due to CalTrain. In addition, if we were to change employers, most likely if we stay in the Bay Area we'd probably work in San Francisco and/or the Silicon Valley area. So Morgan Hill would always have that CalTrain availability.

But personally I probably like the Livermore/ Dublin area more. There seems to just be more there, and doesn't feel quite as isolated as Morgan Hill.

Anyways, any thoughts on the two areas? I'd be considering things like crime rate, schools, commute, etc.

Your wife is going to have very $hitty commute either way. Are you priced out of Fremont?

Haven't really looked into Fremont, don't like it very much.

Morgan Hill by default based off your wife's commute.

They are all basically the same. Cowtowns turned into suburbs with in the last 25 years.

Livermore sucks because the commute is just awful.

In what way do you feel Morgan Hill is isolated? If it's shopping or restaurants you're after, there's plenty there, and anything you can't get in Morgan Hill you can probably get in Gilroy. I think the real solution, though, is probably going to be renting for the time being. There are always boom and bust cycles in the Bay Area, and prices are already beginning to fall in some areas.

Morgan Hill isn't really in the bay area. Livermore is. I'm sure they are both lovely towns. Work in SF- live in Dublin. Work in SJ- live in Morgan Hill. That would be smartest.

Considering all they've done on that is feasibility studies...decades. I'd say actual basic construction (let alone a working system) is a very long way away (probably at least a decade, if not more).

It's not happening anytime soon.
