Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda for the favorites.

Least: Anything on the "other side of the hill" near the 680. Ugh.

Best - Danville, Walnut Creek, Lafayette
Worst - Richmond, Antioch, Hayward

Note: Despite having some very cool areas, I didn't put Oakland or Berkeley on the list, since the sketchy areas bring them down.

Some off-the-beaten-path favorites: Alameda, Crockett, and Pinole. Okay, maybe Alameda is relatively well known these days. But all 3 cities have great weather, character and history, and are in nice geographical settings.

I'm not in the mood to pick least favorites. I do think it's too easy just to choose poor cities; obviously those places have their problems, but it doesn't make me dislike them. I think Richmond is due for a renaissance, but there's not enough happening in the city for me to praise it yet. Places like Blackhawk are probably my least favorite because they are cookie-cutter and tacky.

Milpitas is in the South Bay, not the East Bay.
