No?.
No. Right. We wouldn't.

We're having it because she's in her 90's with cancer losing her home of 66 years.

Yes and she could live to be 115. Then what? Does she get to pay so little for a property that could bring in a lot more?

Don't think that's going to happen. She has cancer now AND she's 97. At that age, the body can barely handle a common cold, let alone cancer.

No?

Then why are we having this conversation at all?

Her age doesn't entitle her to continue living on someone else's property.
Her having cancer doesn't entitle her to continue living on someone else's property.
Her having lived there the previous 66 years doesn't entitle her to continue living on someone else's property.

People that support her probably think I shouldn't evict people over Christmas either.

Her living there is potentially hurting the owner. The owner has EVERY right to do what's in his best interest and shouldn't feel bad about it at all.
God forbid we look at tenants as real people and have some compassion in this world.

I understand this is a complicated situation, and I'm not saying she "deserves" to live there - but she's freaking 97 years old, has cancer, and likely doesn't have many remaining friends/family left around her. To think this is just a normal eviction seems a bit cold (and frankly a bit robotic).

One would think that some sort of compromise could be worked out that gives the landlord/owner what they want (in some capacity), and at least tries to help out (in some capacity) the old women near the end of her life.

But no, we should just throw her out on the street because it's not her property. Sounds like a great idea.

Sorry if I disagree with that premise, or with the idea of a society that is just "OK" with doing that (thankfully there are people in this world that do care about people, at least this particularly person based on the feedback/donations she's receiving).

What a terrible thought that some 97 year old lady (who currently has CANCER) could live to be 115, might as well just put her down now. I can't believe you actually consider yourself a Christian. You'd probably evict Jesus to maximize your profit.

I swear some of you must get off being cold-hearted jerks.

Depending on the details of her illness, she could apply to SS Disability, and they could set her up with a studio, if she qualified. There's got to be a solution to this.

Not sure of the legalities but my understanding is the landlord has a fiduciary duty to sell the property for his kid's trust, after his wife died.

There is a lot more to this story than meets the eye. The landlords wife cheated on him, while he was at home like a sucker taking care of his kids. They were in the process of getting a divorce, when the person the wife had shacked up with wound up killing her. So he inherited the property.

Guy loses wife cuz she is boinking someone on the side

Kid's lose mom cuz the dude she is boinking flips out and kills her.

Dude who killed her only gets convicted of manslaughter and gets a slap on the wrist for punishment.

Old lady with cancer gets evicted.

A sad story all around and just a testament to the whacked out nature of the bay area.
