Motorbike....not a smart safety move for a child, nor for wet weather, which actually does happen. Really terrible idea, IMO. And Marin traffic is not country-like.

The OP and wife don't have much choice. They have to make it work, and they've been doing so rather impressively where they live. If they luck into a unit that's enough below their budget, conceivably they could save to get a Toyota for $2000, if a car turns out to be absolutely necessary. Nobody's telling the OP & company that it will be easy, and they realize it won't. But it sounds like they have job opportunities for growth that aren't available to them where they live, and that this is their chance to improve their lives. For that matter, they could consider getting a studio for the first couple of years, since they're already in one now, and use the savings opportunity to get a car while their income improves. It sounds like they view the MV offer as their big break. I doubt we'll be able to talk them out of it.

We could potentially leave our dog with family.

We have both been offered positions in Mill Valley, and our mode of transportation is bicycle (we don't have a car) or bus.

We've been emailing and calling apartment listings. The ones we're finding meet our criteria are telling us that they will not rent the apartment without us seeing it first. So, I'm going to start inquiring about holding deposits.

If you get a place north of MV (if that turns out to be necessary), you could take the commuter bus bound for SF from your home to MV. That would add transit costs, but it would be possible, if you couldn't live in MV.

The Marin Bicycle Coalition might be able to help you find a safe route, if you do end up biking from out of town. You might be able to network through them for a rental or for child care.

I would be tempted to advise leaving the dog. Maybe in a few years you can rethink it. But you dont need to make the housing situation any tougher.

Chuck: southern marin has a decent semi seperate system of bike paths...and i bet quiet roads that could get to novato if necessary. I have yet to go any further than corte madera tho

Fairfax would be an option too.
