It's a nice place to walk/jog. The Belmont library in this neighborhood is also surrounded by a park.

The Laurel Theater Apts. you mentioned is a nice newer building in a quiet and safe area (there was once a theater on this site) and there is a Trader Joes and Walgreens one block away. There is more shopping further down Laurel St.
You mean they tore down the laurel theater??? I used to work there Boy, waterdog lake... didn't think that thing survived developement that sure brings back memories of high school and riding motorcycles up there....

I almost rented an apartment at Carlmont Woods. Very nice place, with a price to match. In the end I just couldn't see spending $1240 a month on a studio with a partition when my old place was a large one-bedroom for $100 less.

Don't inquire at Carlmont Woods, they'll see the demand and raise my rent, I'm just kidding. The place is nice, except for the thin walls, and thin windows, you can hear a lot of noise sometimes. Essex actually owns another place on Continentals that has larger apartments, I think it is called Belmont Terrace, the 1 bds there are still in the OPs budget. Personally I would avoid places owned by small investors especially condos, they're the ones going into foreclosure nowadays. I know Essex bought Carlmont Woods for only 22M (195 units), and a 50% downpayment, I think it is safe to say it is not going to go into foreclosure.

There are also places further north in San Mateo, near Hillsdale, most don't seem that nice, but the rents are a bit lower. I honestly think the OP would have to tour some places before being able to decide on a right fit.
