I figure at some point, someone might actually visit this forum and want to know something other than how much people make, how much homes cost, and how much rent is (a novel concept indeed).

I like heading over to Carmel Valley and staying at Quail Lodge.

You?

Carmel, Mendocino, Calistoga, the wine country. I'd say Lake Tahoe and the gold country too, but they're not exactly "local."

Camping at Berryessa! The tent camping spots are nice and big and you can get really close to the water. It's not like other local campgrounds that we've stayed at (Del Valle and Brannan Island) where you can only swim in small sectioned off areas of the water -- you can swim anywhere you like. Just watch out for high speed boats! The kids had a blast.

We also did enjoy Del Valle, but only because we could rent a big pontoon boat for the day for a reasonable price and swim off of that. But you can't reserve the boats ahead of time, so it's terrible for someone with anxiety. Otherwise the only swimming was quite a walk or bike ride away from the campsites in a small section of the lake that was super crowded with people.

This was all in 2014 when the lakes had some water. We skipped camping in 2015 because the lakes all seemed to be too low.

I like to hike in the Oakland Hills, Mt Diablo, Fort Funston in SF or Marin Headlands. Walking a dog in Point Isabel is also quite amusing.

Is "local" within a day's drive? Within 2 hours? I think I'd probably use the 2 hour definition...but just curious what you think, Body.

I have a few...

The San Mateo coast ("slow coast" as they dub it) from Half Mon Bay down south (all of the way to the Santa Cruz area); Big Sur and the Ventanna wilderness would be right there, too (a bit of a further drive, but still close); La Honda and the various open space preserves of the Santa Cruz mountains are always a great escape (Purisima Creek being my favorite close park); and it's hard to go wrong with a drive up highway 1 in Marin to Pt Reyes (with a stop at Stinson Beach and Pt. Reyes Station).

Of those, I'd probably go with the San Mateo coast as my favorite, mainly for its proximity to where I live (downtown San Mateo). But I'd be totally fine with someone randomly picking one of those for me, I think.

I like redwood regional park and marin headlands for the perfect blend of accessibility, views, variety of trails and relaxation. Despite being popular, Marin Headlands NEVER feels crowded due to its sheer vastness. Redwood Regional feels more crowded.
