I walk that area multiple times per week and have never felt unsafe. As of yet I have not been stabbed, but the potential remains, as it does in any part of the city.

And that's about the measure of it.

That being said, I do carry a knife and have casually pulled it out a couple times (in other parts of the city, not the one in question) as a gentle warning without saying a word. Probably not advisable, but it's worked to prevent a real confrontation. Most of the time the "bad guy" doesn't want to get into a scuffle where they might have someone fight back, but I wouldn't advise this method for most folk. It's easier to just give them what they want, which is exactly what the Brit didn't do.

I assume you mean Geary and Sutter. That area is pretty hardcore gentrified although the other side of Geary is not good. It used to be a lot more rough, but it is much better now. The area around the Safeway is bad.

I would say that living between Sutter and Geary near Japantown is safer than living in the Mission in the Duboce/24th/S. Van Ness/Guerrero quadrangle and that's a pretty popular area to live.

The apartments on Webster and Post are iffy, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I would be very surprised if something dangerous happened to you in that area. I wouldn't be surprised if you see drug use and your car gets broken into a couple of times. Also parking is very difficult.
