You're right. Our current infrastructure works great. No real traffic to speak of and mass transit goes everywhere, 24 hours a day, and used by the vast majority of people.

Do you think trains are the reason for this? How do you explain away NYC's economic power where trains are used EXTENSIVELY by its population (in fact, many depend on them almost exclusively)?

I was simply saying that trains and buses are not external to the realms of high technology: electrical infrastructure, computer control systems, rail technology, wheels and body design, renewable energy, frequency, reliability, convenience. The Bay Area's infrastructure should reflect the region's standing as the high tech capital of the world.

The most futuristic thing we have are 2100 housing prices.

But maglev bullet trains and hyperloops are.

And we have no right to call ourselves the "high-tech capital" of the world if we're so archaic that we don't even have working trains and buses. Even third-world countries can do better than we can in that case.

We have futuristic housing prices from the year 2100 that's about it.

What utility could either of those systems provide to the Bay Area though?

They are enormously expensive, and both unsuitable to short trips with frequent stops.

Sadly we can't even keep BART or our freeways in good repair. Dream on but there is little hope of a Manhattan or other style train/metro system that will be convenient for Bay Area residence to the point of getting them to ditch their cars. At best we can move people back and forth to work somewhat. We would have to knock down a bunch of stuff and start from scratch to get what people want, and nobody has the time or money for that. Would it even be worth it if an EQ destroys us or extended drought/global warming turns us into a desert in 50 years anyway? LOL.

Oakland traffic isn't that bad. San Francisco traffic is a nightmare.
