I bet you the gap caused by inflation is a whole lot less than the gap caused by appreciation.
Aka I bet the house in sf is worth way closer to the 2015 value of 5 million in 1947 than the 1947 value of the sf house was

Right, at a 3% average annual growth - 5 million in 1919 would be the equivalent to 91 million today. If the painted lady was selling for 91 million then the OP would have a point.

I bet it was less than 200,000 in 1919.

Painted Ladies are iconic properties, there's a hefty premium built into their pricing I'll bet.
