One of her friends in California even asked her if they are able to watch the Academy Awards in Tennessee. Some people need to get out of their own state more often, I guess.

Is this the VA hospital in Palo Alto? If so, that's not really a fun commute to and from San Francisco, my DIL lives in the Richmond district in SF and commutes to Stanford, during commute hours it's not unusual for it to take 2 hours. Why not look for some place closer to your work? If you try

No... but, the cost of housing in SF probably outstrips the higher pay offered for a similiar job in this area, compared to TN. My hunch is the same job in TN would provide enough income for OP to afford to rent his own apt, instead of being stuck with a roommate situation like in SF
