I read a blog written by a Californian who moved to Franklin, which is just south of Nashville. She marvels at Californians impressions of the area. They come visit her and say stuff like "Wow, this is really civilized" and she rolls her eyes. One of her friends in California even asked her if they are able to watch the Academy Awards in Tennessee. Some people need to get out of their own state more often, I guess.

Remember, that 77k is for the OP's experience and production for the job at hand, but also reflects the Bay Area's COL. The OP and anyone else would not be offered 77k for the same position in Tennessee.

Is this the VA hospital in Palo Alto? If so, that's not really a fun commute to and from San Francisco, my DIL lives in the Richmond district in SF and commutes to Stanford, during commute hours it's not unusual for it to take 2 hours. Why not look for some place closer to your work? If you try Padmapper You can look at available rentals on a map and get a better idea of what you can afford.

Why not just live in RWC?

No... but, the cost of housing in SF probably outstrips the higher pay offered for a similiar job in this area, compared to TN. My hunch is the same job in TN would provide enough income for OP to afford to rent his own apt, instead of being stuck with a roommate situation like in SF

No one is going to take a roommate from out of state with two cats into their house. Sorry. Either leave the cats at home or raise your rent budget to $3000 for your own apartment (then good luck finding a landlord that will take pets).

Your hunch is correct.

I can't believe anyone thinks a higher income in SF makes up for anything. Even with the higher income, you just won't be living the same lifestyle.

The only reason to move to SF from lower-cost places is because you love SF so much, that you feel the trade off is worth it . . . or you're getting an opportunity that isn't available elsewhere.
