Hello,

I am moving to Dublin - cheaper, nice apartment, right near Bart. I will be a resident at UCSF. Wondering how exactly people commute from Dublin to UCSF Parnassus. Thank you! I am told I must take BART into city and then take a Muni to Parnassus. Anyone familiar with the UCSF shuttle from any BART stations in SF? Thank you! It be nice to avoid another transfer and more time on the bus!

I appreciate any comments or suggestions.

The best way is to take Bart to Civic Center Station and then transfer to the N-train going to UCSF. UCSF shuttles do not stop at the Bart downtown stations and even if they did the shuttle bus will not be as fast as the light rail train.

Hopefully you will do a sample commute on that route so you will see what you are getting into before signing a lease. If you commute at the common rush hour times the Bart train will be an overcrowded cattle car.

The poster above summed it up for you. Only N-train mostly runs on surface streets after it leaves Civic Center and is quite slow ( but so would be any other type of transport). So expect about an hour and a half each way for the entire commute. The good thing is you should be able to get a sit on BART in both directions.

Thanks. I plan on catching BART at about 615 in the morning. Coming back home will differ in times, but probably 7 or 8 at night. I have heard others say it is not hard to get a seat on Bart from dublin. I do not plan to commute during rush hour times. I really liked dublin, visited twice before we decided, thank God for Bart out there!

I'm amazed you are enthusiastic about this commute, which would destroy my soul. Good luck! Note that SF Muni is not the best transit system for on-time performance. If you're used to commuting in a city like Boston or NY, you are going to need to make adjustments.

I am not enthusiastic about it, but its not the worst thing in the world. I'll hopefully have a seat to do work on the BART. I mean, there are limited options for a resident on a budget in SF. I'm not going to live in a run down efficiency and pay a ridiculous rent and parking fee on top of that. Prices in SF are way out of my range. Plus, I like living away from the concrete and I like to see green. City life never fit my style. I enjoy the city on occasion. It will be a rough commute but I know people do it.

I've also heard a rumor that UCSF shuttle picks up at 16th mission BART. Unsure if this is true but plan to call the shuttle Monday. I start July 1 so need to get this all straight. And I do plan to do a couple test runs.

Original Poster, an easy way to research this subject is Google Maps. Just go to:

Google Maps

Click on the blue arrow for Directions. Type in your starting address and ending address (you can type in "UCSF Parnassus" as the ending address). Then click on the bus icon for transit directions. It will tell you what what bus/light rail/bart to take and when.

You can also use the Maps application on Android or the Apple Maps application. On the smartphone, if you activate your GPS, the maps application can use your current location as the starting location for transit directions.

Google maps says it would take 1 hour, 20 minutes. That's a fairly short commute on transit. Mine is typically over two hours and does not destroy my soul.

hmm well, transit is pretty reliable in Silicon Valley. I haven't noted any major problems with Caltrain either. Can't speak for Muni.
