From what I read the extension to Pittsburg and Antioch will involve transferring to another station to cut cost reducing it's usefulness. The extension to Livermore has ling been delayed and it will likely go to Northern Livermore rather then Downtown.

Will bullet train steam roll Central Valley agriculture?

My speculation is that commuters from the Silicon Valley to the Central Valley will have minimal impact on SF and the Silicon Valley but rather ease housing prices in commuter suburbs in the Outer East Bay and further out places such Mountain House.

High-speed rail could transform Fresno’s poorest neighborhood. Will Trump get on the train?

Thanks for updating this thread. I didn't originally see it but have been speculating precisely that high speed rail isn't designed to go between the end points of LA and SF but to go from places in the Central Valley to either region to create viable suburbs much farther from job centers. With both gubernatorial candidates touting construction of millions of new housing units, this may be the only strategy to create affordable housing. Ironically, it will cost billions to build the train, so why not just build a lot more dense urban housing and just subsidize the cost? At least that would avoid further sprawl.

Yup. We are new homeowners (retired, tho) in Prunedale. Gilroy is just up the road 10 minutes.

Rather than live in $,$$$,$$$anta Cruz and commute over the 17 to San Jose - live near Gilroy and get to San Jose faster via HSR.

Homes in Northern Monterey County (Prunedale, Salinas, Royal Oaks, Watsonville, etc.) are going FAST. But they're mostly not over $1Million. More like in the $600K range.

"Meanwhile, advocates for low-income residents warn that the very thing train boosters are promising — trainloads of Bay Area techies moving to the Valley — will lead to gentrification and a nightmarish spike in housing prices. The Central Valley is already facing a long list of issues, including poor air quality, a lack of affordable housing and contaminated water, and social justice advocates are worried Valley residents will be left behind by any progress created by the bullet train.

“We’re concerned that one of high speed rail’s major goals is to address a lack of affordable housing in the Bay Area,” said Veronica Garibay, a co-founder and co-director of the Fresno-based Leadership Counsel for Justice and Accountability. “How are families already living in the Valley today going to benefit from all of this? (High speed rail) is just one small component of the pressures that are facing and are going to face this region.”

This is JUST ONE of the many threads/posts on the "bullet train/high-speed rail" subject. This thread has been flailing on for years.

Please read all of them before posting on any, and don't bring up any point that has already been raised.

Thank You.

Annnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnd the project is dead. Great job environmentalists. Democrats allowed you to challenge every inch of it to the point that costs ballooned out of control and caused decades of delays. Billions wasted but at least Newsome is making his donors happy by building the most insignificant part of it where nobody will use it. Money well spent!

Maybe he's like Nostradamus and knows SoCal and NoCal will break off and fall into the Pacific leaving the Valley all that's left of California with Bakersfield becoming the "new LA" and Merced the "new San Fran", bam a high speed rail between LA and San Francisco!
