After the recent police killings in Baton Rouge and near St. Paul, it was nice to come across this story about how the SFPD defused a potentially deadly situation with an armed man using patience, negotiation, and non-lethal tactics. I know that there have been some recent police killings in SF that have not been handled nearly as well, like the killing of Mario Woods. It seems that just maybe the police there have learned something from that. Would that police departments in the rest of the country could learn it too.

Would it have been that awful if a person who wanted to die, and was willing to endanger innocent lives around them have been taken out by the police? I say good riddance.

What if the outcome had not been so casualty-free? Then the SFPD would be demonized for not having acted quicker, like in the Orlando killings.

If someone poses a danger to society, I don't care how he gets taken out. The most important thing is the safety of law abiding citizens, not whether the mean of neutralizing a dangerous person was non-lethal.

What planet are you living on, and waving those rah, rah, rah, cop pom poms so frantically? Have you perhaps not heard of Dan White? Or maybe the Bart cops that shot Oscar Grant while he was handcuffed and lying down?

OK, maybe you have been living in a cave....how about Rodney King? No, not in S.F., but it's a Cali thing, get it? Where are you from??? Proud of the police? Boy, you really got no idea, do you? I guarantee: white, yuppie, self entitled. This is all about the ever sinking and constantly devolving citizen make up of a once great town. Disgusting.

Are you suggesting we ignore any good the police do because of prior mistakes? I'm not sure I follow you.

Or that all police should be held responsible for the decisions of a few bad cops? I'm not sure why we can't treat them like individuals - just like, you know, with anyone.

Of course, police forces should be aware how bad decisions of the few affect them all, and they should adjust their tactics accordingly - but since we are capable of logical thought as humans, we should cut the good cops some slack. A little understanding and perspective goes a long way on both sides.
