Thoughts on Afghan Refugee Resettlement, YIMBYism, and Enclavism:

https://robertstark.substack.com/p/t...e-resettlement

"If California is looking for where to resettle Afghans, there is a direct solution that is radically YIMBY and upholds the enclavist ideal of resettling immigrants where they have connections. Little Kabul in the East Bay City of Fremont is one of the most significant Afghan diaspora enclaves in the west and Fremont alone has many massive parking lots in its downtown, around its BART station, and in the neighboring cities of Newark around its mall, and in Hayward.

I propose a series of dense archology inspired developments on these parking lots, that alone could accommodate the roughly 20 thousand special visa holders that were admitted. These developments could borrow upon Afghan inspired architectural styles: a sort of archeo-futurism with the potential to create the next great urban center for the Bay Area that could become a renowned tourist destination, bringing in revenue for the local economy."

So in the meantime, what is your solution for the homeless crisis? That problem can't even seem to be tackled...and you want to bring more people here who will require total assistance by the government and volunteer organizations.

It's nice virtual signaling, but seriously???

Fremont/Bay Area is probably the worst place for refugees to live? Where will they live? In $3,500 month apartments?

They are going to buy a 2 million dollar home? Yeah, California is diverse and that is a plus that the refugees would be around their own culture but the midwest is cheap, dirt cheap.

Take the refugees to Kansas, Nebraska, Indiana etc. or some sticks state where a home costs $100,000 and an apartment costs like $500 a month.

This is exactly right. Fremont is almost absurdly affluent. No future for low-skilled refugees here.

I'm surprised no one has suggested the inland areas (besides Sacramento)?

In Nor Cal, that could be Yuba City, Stockton, Modesto, Tracy, Merced?

In So Cal, that could be the Antelope Valley, Hemet, Bakersfield?

The Antelope Valley would be ideal. It's in Los Angeles County and has access to a large social safety net, it's affordable, close to Los Angeles and the topography and geography are very similar to most parts of Afghanistan (deserts, forests, mountains, etc).

That's a idea worth looking into. I will also add, any English speaking Afghans, who are trained in the healthcare field (MDs, RNs, Dentist) look into settling them in communities where there is a lack of healthcare providers. I don't know how long the process is to become licensed to provide care is here for someone coming from another country

"With the recent victories for pro-housing policy in our state legislature, California is finally grappling with five decades of resistance to building more homes in our cities," said Matthew Lewis, director of communications for California YIMBY, a nonprofit that advocates for policies that would allow more housing availability in California. "Sadly, that won't help today's refugees, whether they're fleeing war in Afghanistan or wildfires right here in the Sierra Nevada.”

Why Afghan Refugees Aren’t Actually Welcome in California
All the lawn signs in the world won’t change the fact that housing costs are impossibly high for most refugees.

The Bay Area's liberal politicians keep virtue signaling but have not done enough to help accommodate refugees. How many reps voted for the Afghan War? Feinstein.
