For me it's a tie between Marin and the Peninsula. It's hard to go wrong with any region in the Bay Area for access to great wilderness, though, as I think they are all great.

If I were to rank, for me:

1 - 2 tie: Marin = Peninsula
3: Western Santa Clara Valley
4: Lamorinda (where does the inner East Bay fit into this? I'd put it in this spot with Lamorinda if that were an option)
5: Central Contra Costa County
6-7 tie: Southern Santa Clara Valley = Eastern Alameda County

Your definition of the Peninsula leaves out the beautiful coast from Pacifica down through Montara and Half Moon Bay...

I was just thinking that before I saw your comment. +1 Peninsula is nice because you can see the Santa Cruz Mountains or get to the Bay pretty easily. And the beaches are only 30-45 minutes away.

That's true. Also the reason I left out places like Napa and Sonoma is in general they are thought of as vacation destinations rather than commuter suburbs such as the other places I listed but I suppose they could be added.

Parts of Southern Santa Clara Valley are very scenic such as Coyote Valley and areas surrounding Gilroy.

Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz are commuter destinations. Lots of people drive into the peninsula for work.

Yes. And I was wondering if the Santa Cruz mountains would qualify.

I didn't say they weren't scenic.
