Hi all, I'm contemplating moving to California and would like to know if anyone knows the most affordable and safe places to live (no or minimum crime). I'm just one person with no family. Just a room is good enough for me but I don't want to live with roommates. I would like to be able to get to San Francisco where there are lots of tech companies and startups in around an hour or less via car or public transportation for work. Thank you all for your responses...

Every city on the peninsula is cheap. You'll have no problem renting a house for 500 dollars a month, please come!

If you don't want to live with roommates then "just a room" isn't good enough for you.

The needle on my sarcasm detector just spun past the high end of the spectrum and fell off. It's busted now.

You didn't really give us much to work with. We need a little more information to give you any kind of good suggestions. You said San Francisco which happens to be one of the most expensive cities in country, so you need to be aware of that. If a city is cheaper in the Bay Area, there's a reason. The Bay Area is made up of 9 counties and has over 7 million people. You need to figure out which area you're focusing on. And, in the Bay Area, "affordable" is subjective. It will still be expensive by most standards.

Also, the title of your thread says "state of California". California is bigger and more populated than many countries in the world. You really need to narrow down your search for anybody to give you good advice here.

It should be around an hour or less of Silicon Valley (which according to Wikipedia is the southern region of the San Francisco Bay Area) via car or public transportation.

Don't know about $500/month, but Hollister is prob an hour out from San Jose depending on traffic, prob the best you will do

An hour or less from the Valley that's somewhat affordable (about the best you can hope for on the coast) would be Gilroy, Hollister or Salinas. Those are more agriculturally oriented cities to the south. I use to live in Salinas and you can get to San Jose in about 45-60 minutes depending on traffic. There are commuter shuttles. They're all a good ninety minutes to two hours from San Francisco though.

He said no or mininal crime. That certainly doesnt describe salinas. His equation is not possible: 1 hour to silicon valley + no crime=affordable. OP, you will need to tinker with your variables.
