This was allowed by the local officials in Oakland. No ifs, ands, or buts. There is literally no way this property could be operating as a residential property in this manner for so many years without NO ONE knowing at code enforcement. It simply does not make sense. Many people reported the warehouse as having tenants (the most recent reports only being this year), and rents ranged from $800-$1500 depending on the space being rented, and no one in Oakland Housing Authority did anything about it.
Three years under the current lease if I am not mistaken.

Oakland Housing Authority is exclusive to HUD subsidized housing which is subject to ongoing annual inspections unless you have a good track record it may be every two years... and one call from a tenant or owner requesting interim inspection is all it takes.

So there are thousands of Oakland units that are inspected...

It could very well be a gap that allowed warehouse space to fly under the radar for many reasons... almost a loophole.

Code Enforcement and Fire are much different than the Housing Authority....

I'm sure the owner who owns several properties isn't going around to visit all of his places as long as the rent is paid every month
It goes much deeper... the code of Habitability only applies to residential property.

In order to collect residential rent the unit must be habitable and there is no way around that.

Habitability is defined by law...

A warehouse by definition and zoning is not a Habitable Space.

Wow the decor inside that place was amazing. Looks like a video game in there. I would sure like to know how that fire got started.

Apparently a refrigerator is the leading candidate right now: Sheriff: Warehouse fire probe focused in area full of appliances - SFGate

They were overloading the hodgepodge of wiring they had in there pretty badly, so it's not surprising this happened in the middle of the concert (when the wiring was being stressed most).

And considering the fridge was older, possibly very old (probably found in a junk yard somewhere, like a lot of the stuff in the warehouse), it wouldn't be surprising if this was the appliance that sparked.

Almost never hear of a refrigeration fire...

Common is extension cords with multiple taps or a power strip on the end.

A proper electrical system is size to trip a beaker of fuse before fire...

No control over extension cords even in the most up to date buildings...

I have policy of no portable heaters and no permanent extension cords for lights or appliances...

Some cords are very cheap.

The hospital has only had a handful of tripped breakers in 25 years and EACH time it was caused by an employee that brought in a portable heater or heat producing device for holiday cooking...

At one Fruitvale building I use to manage the tenant complained of faulty wiring because she had to have her son keep his hand on the circuit breaker so she could cook food for Sunday Services... honest to God.

The wiring was perfect it is just she had 3 electric skillets plugged into the same circuit!!!

This is an asinine post.
Government not involving itself in regulating rental transactions and property use is laissez faire capitalism and extremely conservative even libertarian

Especially in light of the mayor saying she considers the Oakland art scene an economic engine of the city

It was illegally being used as a residential property but it still was not one and that makes a big difference.

No. No. No. We don't. The problem is the housing market in the Bay Area is not free at all. It is rigged by NIMBYs who fight any and all housing development tooth and nail--not to mention all the state and local land use regulations and restrictions.

Free market never has existed, people who say we have a free market usually never studied politics, history, economics beyond the 101 level.

One of the wealthiest areas of the US, a supposed "1st world country" and people burn in droves....
Greedy liberals aka hypocritical lying corrupt criminals who like to trumpet how "benevolent" they're surely don't want to share what they grabbed and love to create squalor and ghettos right by their side.
(just look at the cooks who run Oakland, by the way, look at the clown show...oh so enlightened and "progressive" aka inept and incapable)

Oh yes their idea of free market is selling America to Chinese and other overseas mafia people, for dirty cash.
