I'm going to be living in the northern excelsior area, about 10 minutes of a walk to the nearest bart train and will be going to school near the montgomery street bart station.

I am thinking i'm going to need the BART HVD 45/48 pass on the clipper card (although i have no idea what 45/48 or 60/64 mean even after reading the description). Will this allow me to also use the bus in SF or do I need a separate pass for that?

This is a bit different for me because i'm used to the NYC unlimited monthly pass where you don't have to think too much about it. I appreciate all your guys' help.

No those are Bart only tickets. The 45/48 means you get $48 worth of rides for $45. You still are paying per ride.

The pass you need is the $91 Muni + Bart within SF pass. This allows unlimited monthly rides on both Muni buses, trains, cable cars and Bart within SF. This means you can ride from the Glen Park, Balboa Park, 24th,16th, Civic Center,Powell,Montgomery and Embarcadero stations.

You will need to pay extra on Bart if you take it out of SF.
