If your friends are mostly hipsters, then you will think most people don't travel to Richmond because they would rather have watered down ethnic food that is served a hip renovated space that charges 2x the price and mixes Vietnamese with Korean with Mexican. Besides the authentic taquerias like Taqueria Cancun, the Mission is fine for bar hopping, but restaurant wise... ehhh over-priced, lacks authenticity

Many of my friends go to the Richmond/Sunset to eat too, but that's because they have done the touristy things many times over and they're not looking to mix and mingle at that particular night.

For someone who is visiting SF for the first time in a long while and looking to soak in the culture of SF, I wouldn't send that person to the Avenues. That's like telling a tourist to skip the Magnificent Miles in Chicago because it's overpriced and instead spend the night dinning in the Pilsen because it has cheap authentic food.

If I'm the tourist, my thinking would be, "I can get authentic food back home. What I really want to see are things that is unique to SF and I can't get anywhere else."

.

100% agreed! The Mission is very much SF right now (and there is way more than fusion food in the Mission). It gives a tourist a very SF experience, that isn't typical tourist.

One of my fave mission restaurants it Dosa!

The OP is staying by USF, so it's not like the OP has to go out of his way to eat at some of my fvorite restaurants in SF because he is basically staying in Inner Sunset/Richmond already.

Also, why travel all the way to SF just to visit a dirty trashy area, he could visit the ghetto in any major city in America and have a similar experience besides seeing hipsters everywhere.

Is there a cool late night bar or unique attraction to go see?

Benjamin Cooper - a somewhat hidden and very small bar in Nob Hill. NE corner of Geary and Mason, on Mason you'll find an unmarked door with their logo painted on the inside. Go up the stairs and take the door on your right. Some great cocktails for serious drinkers, and raw oysters to eat.
