I know about Live 105.3 in SF and Channel 104.9 in San Jose, There is a classic rock station 107.7 the bone...owned by the same people who run DFWs 93.3 the bone...is there a station in the bay that caters to new hard rock and not to old hard rock like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Slayer, Pantera, Nirvana, and the like, a station that doesn't play poppy alternative acts and a few good songs in between?

radio is garbage in bay area. try the university radio stations, kusf 90.3 and ucberkeley radio kalx 90.7

I agree - the radio here SUCKS for a big metro area.
That's why I'm considering Sirius digital radio, especially now that I'm commuting a long way (100 miles/day). That being said, my favorite station is probably 98.5, which is classic rock - but it's based in San Jose, I believe, and barely comes in north of San Mateo-ish. I also like 97.3 (Alice), but that's definitely not hard rock... 107.7 used to be pretty heavy, but it may have gone R&B in recent years. Anyway, I'll let you know if I think of anything better!

Are San Jose radio stations not accessible to the SF/Oakland area and likewise of SF/Oakland stations in San Jose because of the mountains?

Yes I live in SF, and believe it or not, I commute all the way to Napa. It actually is a rather pleasant commute, since I work from 12-9pm, and don't have to deal with traffic... the bridge is usually clear, and I can cruise 80mph up/down I-80 for most of the way. The morning part usually takes exactly an hour, and coming home is more like 50 minutes.
Now if I actually worked a 9-5 job, this would be a
horrendous commute, so I wouldn't recommend it for someone with normal hours!
P.S. I haven't relocated to Napa because it's a temporary (6-month) job, and I didn't want to give up my place in SF for that... it might go permanent at some point, so then I'd consider moving up north. While it isn't a bad drive, it's not ideal either - and costing a LOT in gas & tolls, especially since you have to cross 2 bridges.

the dial is pretty crowded and a few lower power stations aren't heard all over bay area but typically something from SJ is picked up in SF and vice versa. The bay is a big, flat space that doesn't interfere much with radio.

Can you own a car in the bay and take public transport for getting around the bay area (SF/Oakland/San Jose)...are there two types of public transport...I heard bart is expensive and doesn't ahave a fixed price...rather you are charged by how much you travel...the other is like a fixed monthly price and you can go all over for that flat fee...am I correct? btw doesn't san jose have mountains around it?

That's why I'm considering Sirius digital radio, especially now that I'm commuting a long way (100 miles/day). That being said, my favorite station is probably 98.5, which is classic rock - but it's based in San Jose, I believe, and barely comes in north of San Mateo-ish. I also like 97.3 (Alice), but that's definitely not hard rock... 107.7 used to be pretty heavy, but it may have gone R&B in recent years. Anyway, I'll let you know if I think of anything better!
Now if I actually worked a 9-5 job, this would be a horrendous commute, so I wouldn't recommend it for someone with normal hours!
