Years ago, we lived in Pacifica, it is a great town & it does get a lot of foggy days but not every day. I would see what the price differences in rent would be, but I really loved my time in Pacifica. It is great to be so close to the Ocean.

Pacifica will be foggy and overcast, but has its clear days too and the view of the ocean or sunset is amazing.

Have you visited both places? You should check them both out, to see which you like best. Having a short commute is definitely a QOL enhancer in the Bay Area, but there wouldn't be much point if you don't like the community you'd be commuting to and from. If you're charmed by San Rafael and Marin, OTOH, the bus commute could make that option livable. The other thing to consider is the rent comparison in view of your take-home pay.

Drop the bridge and you will thank me.

I lived in Marin near San Rafael several years ago. The Inner Richmond is the part of SF that is closest to Marin, IIRC. Back in 2011/2012 (way outdated, I know), San Rafael to the Inner Richmond was a pretty doable commute. Worst part of commuting into the city from Marin wasn't the drive over the GG, but rather navigating Van Ness and other city streets. This is kept to a minimum if commuting to the northwestern part of the city.

Commuting to Downtown or SOMA is a different story.

They're only about 2 miles difference from the two to the Inner Richmond. I'd take San Rafael in a heartbeat. Beautiful weather.

GG bridge traffic is also not nearly as bad as richmond bridge and bay bridge traffic.

Getting out of Pacifica can be quite bad.

Commuting from Pacifica means NO bridge at all. They're commuting from Pacifica to SF (Inner Richmond district).

there's 19th Ave but that's no bargain either.............speaking of 19th Ave, when the hell are they going to resurface that disaster.

We used to take the Great Highway, it is a beautiful drive. It might be a few miles longer, but looking at the waves made it worth it, for us. 19th Ave is too busy.

Right, I just meant that GG bridge traffic is not nearly as bad as the rest - so a San Rafael to northern SF commute is very very reasonable, even better if you enter 101 south of the Richmond Bridge exit, since a lot of the traffic in the a.m. is actually Novato-through-San Rafael from people going to the east bay.

I know it's not ultra accurate or anything, however I just put in directions on Google Maps from the two starting points to the Inner Richmond at 8:30 am on a weekday.

San Rafael -> Inner Richmond = 22 to 35 minutes
Pacifica -> Inner Richmond = 26 to 50 minutes
