So my wife and I are planning a trip to San Francisco - We've never been so we're going strictly as tourists. We plan on making it a road trip and hitting a few other destinations along the way...

So, I've been looking for lodging, and it seems to me that my best bet would be to find a nice hotel/motel somewhere outside of the city that provides free parking and that is in walking distance to a bart station. Obviously my intent is to minimize cost while securing a safe place to both sleep and park.

We will only be at the hotel/motel just to sleep and leave our car/belongings, so I really don't care where it is, as long as it's safe, inexpensive, and somewhere on a BART line.

I am not at all familiar with the San Francisco area, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I don't even need specific motels/hotels, just areas/suburbs that might fit the bill. Thx in advance!!

Edit - I know it's not going to be dirt cheap, I just mean cheap in comparison to staying in downtown San Francisco.

There are plenty of nice options near SF Airport, which has a BART Station connected to it. You can stay anywhere from a nice Embassy Suites, down to a cheap Travelodge. That's my recommendation

If I can find something decent under $150 per night it would be worth my while. Anything over that and I would rather just pay a little more and stay right in the city.

The Geary Parkway motel is in a suburb of San Francisco, with lots of restaurants & bars on Clement St ( one block over) It is not near to Bart, but the bus will take you downtown. It stops right outside the motel, ( tuns every 5 minutes or so) or it will also take a person out to Ocean Beach/sutro ruins etc. It also has free parking.

Staybridge Suites in San Bruno is a short walk to San Bruno Bart and near Tanforan Mall. Bart is a good way to get to downtown SF and the tourist attractions east of Van Ness Ave. For exploring Golden Gate Park,Land Ends,Legion of Honor,Twin Peaks and Ocean Beach one is much better off driving instead of waiting a long time for very slow buses.

I would agree that many muni buses are slow but the 38 Geary is the exception, it tuns every few minutes & is quite dependable. The Geary motel is also a few blocks away (walking distance) from Golden gate park. I guess it depends on what Op wants to explore/visit.
San Bruno is another good option.
